Ultima Mono Power Amp
Ultima, with no number after it, is the flagship mono power amplifier and the reason the rest of the range exists. Seven hundred and eighty watts into 8 ohms, 1,405 into 4, from sixty-four proprietary MOSFETs driven by circuitry that slews at 300 volts per microsecond. It was the first completely new circuit Chord had drawn since the company started: a dual-feed-forward error-correction topology developed from a paper by Malcolm Hawksford at Essex University, refined by Bob Cordell of Bell Labs, and finished with John Franks' own high-frequency power supplies. The number that explains how it sounds is not the wattage but the peak current — over 500 amps, delivered fast enough that a loudspeaker never waits. Sixty-six kilos each, and they are monoblocks: you need two.
