Chord Electronics Ultima Mono Power Amp amplifier
Your speakers are the kind amplifiers give up on — big, stubborn, in a big room — and you never want to hear an amplifier give up again. Ultima, with no number after it, is the monoblock the whole Chord range descends from: the first completely new circuit since the company began, from a paper by Malcolm Hawksford, refined by Bob Cordell, finished with John Franks' power supplies. 780 watts into 8 ohms, 1,400 into 4, 2,500 into 2 — but the number you hear is the peak current, more than 500 amps, delivered so fast that a loudspeaker never waits: a timpani is one hit, a double bass has an edge, the bass stops as abruptly as it started. Sixty-six kilos each, monoblocks: you need two, and a floor that will carry it.
